As the warm afternoon sun shone on Seaside Lagoon, Tom Kearney and Scott Williams rushed around, cell phones in hand, readying the Redondo Beach swimming hole for its latest venture.
Come Tuesday, though, when visitors are invited to circle around their temporary ice rink in new pairs of rented skates, the last-minute rush to get the doors open should be all but forgotten. Or maybe not.
At 4 p.m., Seaside Ice will open with figure skating champ Randy Gardner and skating exhibitions.
"It's been quite an amazing journey, making ice on the beach," Kearney said Thursday, when temperatures were expected to hit the high 70s, and workers that night were to begin pumping in a cooling liquid. "It ain't easy, but we're all very excited. It's coming together."
