Central Avenue and Beyond
A promotional print for 1937's "Harlem on the Prairie," starring Herb Jeffries. Frustrated by Hollywood bigotry, blacks produced their own "race films" through the '40s, which provided opportunities for artists like Jeffries, a Duke Ellington Orchestra baritone-turned-singing cowboy.
