Atlantic City's Steel Pier, once dubbed the "showplace of the nation," will close by the end of October. Trump Entertainment Resorts, which owns the New Jersey property, is studying proposals for a development that includes housing, stores, restaurants and a hotel, a Trump spokesman said. The pier, which opened in 1898, once attracted thousands to watch the diving horse plunge 40 feet into the sea and such entertainers as Charlie Chaplin, Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra.
