Arthur, recently a British mountaineer, David Sharp, 34, died while descending from the summit, and some, including the great Sir Edmund Hillary, deplored the fact that many climbers in the area had failed to offer help. It was noted, though, that the temperature at that level was about minus 100 degrees F, a grave threat to any human.
