World's Smallest Nation
In 1967, Paddy Roy Bates commandeered a World War II-era British
defense platform located six miles off the eastern coast of England.
Since it was in international waters, he declared it the PRINCIPALITY OF
SEALAND, an independent nation. While no other country has recognized
this claim, Bates and his family have ruled their platform for over 40
years. Paddy Roy Bates passed away recently. He was 91 years old.
