Titanic anniversary cruise nearly sold out
Only a handful of cabins have yet to be sold on a cruise that is to follow the route of the Titanic to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship.
Miles Morgan Travel, which has chartered the Balmoral from Fred Olsen Cruises, said that the 1,230-berth ship would be filled with passengers from 26 countries, including relatives of 30 people who died on the Titanic.
The ship will sail from Southampton on April 8, 2012. It will dock at the Irish port of Cobh, where the Titanic made its final call on April 11, 1912. On April 14 it will arrive at the spot where the vessel went down, with the loss of more than 1,500 lives. A memorial service will be held between 11.40pm – when the ship hit the iceberg – and 2.20am on April 15, the moment it sank.
The Balmoral will sail on to Halifax, Nova Scotia – passengers will visit the cemetery where 121 victims are buried – and finally New York.
Passengers will be able to hear lectures from Titanic experts, buy memorabilia and sample menus that were offered on the original cruise.
