"Exhibiting the Bournonville style"
Nikolaj Hübbe was born in Copenhagen in 1967. He began his dance training at age ten at the Royal Danish Ballet School. In 1986 he was awarded the silver medal in the Paris Ballet Competition, as well as the French Critics Prize. In 1987 he won first prize in the Eurovision Ballet Competition.
Mr. Hübbe joined the New York City Ballet in July of 1992 as a Principal Dancer. He made his debut with the company during its annual season in Saratoga Spring, N.Y. His first performance was in Balanchine's Donizetti Variations, a work which exhibits much of the clarity and purity associated with the Bournonville style in which Mr. Hübbe was trained. He has also performed in leading roles of Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins and David Allan, who created roles for him.
