On this day in 1954 the USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571) was launched

The USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571), the first nuclear submarine, was launched January 21, 1954 (over 50 years ago) and commissioned September 30, 1954 with CDR Eugene P. Wilkinson in command. The Nautilus crossed the North Pole August 3, 1958 with CDR William R. Anderson in command. It was decommissioned March 3, 1980. The number of Dives: 2,507 and the total Nautical Miles Steamed: 513,550.
